I’m a Navy veteran who found my passion for barbering after serving honorably from 2001-2008. At R&R Head Labs, I blend my love for artistry with my commitment to helping people feel confident and empowered. For me, barbering is more than just transforming someone’s look—it’s about creating a supportive, inclusive space where everyone feels welcome. I’m dedicated to mentoring others and advocating for mental health awareness within the barbering community, helping people find their fresh start.
My Story
I grew up in Denver, Colorado, where I spent my early years, but it wasn’t until I moved to a small town in Mt. Holly, Arkansas, that I truly discovered the rich culture of barbering. In that small town, barbering was more than just a trade—it was a valued skill passed down through generations of seasoned Master Barbers. After my time serving honorably in the Navy from 2001-2008, I found myself searching for a new career path, and it was the culture of those Dixie barbershops that reignited my passion for barbering.
I first picked up clippers as a teenager, cutting hair for fun and experimenting with friends—one neighbor even let me mess up his hair for free! I didn’t know it at the time, but that excitement of transforming someone’s look and watching their confidence grow was addictive. Years later, after going through a difficult divorce, I decided to pursue barbering professionally and enrolled in barber school.
Barbering gives me a creative outlet, but more than that, it’s a way for me to connect with people—my sons, family members, and now my clients. I’ve honed my craft through hands-on practice, mentorship from experienced barbers, and staying on top of trends and techniques. My time in the Navy also instilled a sense of discipline and pride that I carry into every haircut.
One moment that stays with me is the time a client, who had recently been incarcerated and was struggling with drug abuse, sat in my chair. After I finished his haircut, he looked in the mirror and broke into tears. He told me that the fresh cut gave him the confidence to apply for jobs and make a fresh start. It’s moments like that that remind me barbering is more than just a haircut—it can be the spark that helps someone get their life back on track.
I’ve faced my own struggles—homelessness, family addiction, and growing up in a tough environment—but those challenges shaped me into who I am today. They gave me the empathy to connect with clients who are going through their own battles. For me, barbering isn’t just a job; it’s been a lifeline. It gave me purpose when I needed it most, and it’s how I now give back to my community.
At R&R Head Labs, we’re committed to breaking down the barriers and biases that people may have about formerly incarcerated individuals. I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it can be when someone is given a second chance. That’s why I’m passionate about mentoring younger barbers and sharing my story. I want everyone who sits in my chair to feel seen, heard, and confident.
Barbering isn’t just a profession for me—it’s a passion that connects me to people and their stories. I’m here to show that no matter what you’ve been through, there’s always a path forward. My hope is that through my work, I can help others find their purpose, overcome challenges, and build a community where everyone belongs.
